Located in the heart of Cricklade, Wiltshire, The Alternative Drum School operates from its very own soundproof studio.
The studio is set up using two kits side by side to enhance the lessons and make them easy to understand. We pride ourselves in using high quality drums, cymbals and accessories. We also cater for all sorts of potential set ups; double bass drum pedals, use of EFX cymbals (China's, Splashes and Stax), we also use Tama Octoban's for extreme progressive music - our speciality!
The School endorses Pearl Drums, uses DW Drums and Pedals, Zildjian and Sabian Cymbals, Vater Drum Sticks and Remo Skins.
Ollie first picked up a pair of Sticks aged 11 at that point he was watching friends play drums in music lessons at school and was captivated by the power and intensity of the instrument.
After spending many break and lunchtimes just watching other kids play He expressed interest to his parents and they suggested he go along to the local brass band to see about joining in. Ollie's sister was playing in the main band at the time on 2nd Cornet and because of this, was able to sit in and watch the band rehearsal. To hear the drums played in that context blew him away!! And from that moment, knew this was what he wanted to do.
Ollie joined the training band playing a basic kit and playing to a lot of traditional brass band marching music - also he was asked if he'd like to sit in with the MainBand on Percussion - as he sat watching many practices anyway. It was at the point he was taken under the wing of Teresa Hambery Hatton - drummer of the band and Ollie's biggest inspiration.
As time went on Ollie took some Lessons through the Band with Ken Middleton - a former percussionist with the BBC symphony orchestra. Ken taught traditional grip and rudiments only on the Snare drum
A great stick control guy, these lessons helped develop rhythm and the understanding of Rudimental drumming!
For ten years or more Ollie played many gigs with the band developing his ability to perform in front of an audience and more importantly with 30+ musicians. Playing his ever growing percussion setup he played a lot of Drum Kit at home along to his favourite songs and more so to random music played on the Radio.
Playing in many bands over the years, Ollie found his passion in Progressive and heavier music and joined forces with friends Tom Ashley and Rich Bennett to form "The DiveBomb Revolution" this took him out giging all over the UK and into the Recording Studio to record EP's and a self tilted album.
In 2008 Ollie opened the doors of The Alternative Drum School and started to build his teaching practice offering a different approach in drum education blending a mixture of traditional rudimental skills, control and technic and just playing to the students favourite songs and developing the ear, in order to empower people to play to anything!
Ollie's passion for drums and education now see's over 100 people on his books on a weekly basis but is always able to arrange a lesson for new pupils or drummers that want to progress to the next level or advanced drummers who simply want something new to learn.
